Travellers often search for the 'classic' El Transcantábrico. Here is the important update: that train has been retired, and its role is now filled by a separate train, the Costa Verde Express. The luxury Gran Lujo continues as the flagship.

El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo

The flagship. The Gran Lujo ('Grand Luxury') is the premium train, running the full 8-day, 7-night route between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela. Its 14 Grand Deluxe Suites are among the largest on any tourist train in the world, each with a sitting area and a full bathroom with hydromassage shower. Service, gastronomy and excursions are at the highest level.

The Costa Verde Express (the former 'classic')

The shorter northern journeys once run by the classic Transcantábrico are now operated by the Costa Verde Express, which follows a different, shorter route along Green Spain. Its cabins are comfortable and characterful but more compact, and the experience, while still special, sits below the Gran Lujo in space, length and price.
