Because both trains run through 'Green Spain', the Costa Verde Express is the comparison we are asked about most often after Al Ándalus. Here is how El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo compares.
Same coast, different class
Both follow the spectacular northern coastline on the narrow-gauge network, sharing many of the same landscapes — the Picos de Europa, Asturian fishing villages, Cantabrian beaches. The Costa Verde Express is the more accessible option: comfortable, characterful, with shorter itineraries and a lower price point. It also took over the shorter routes once run by the retired 'classic' Transcantábrico. The Transcantábrico Gran Lujo is the full luxury experience — larger suites, longer 8-day route all the way to Santiago, and a higher standard of gastronomy and service.
Itinerary and length
The Costa Verde Express typically runs shorter trips (for example between Bilbao and Oviedo/Ferrol). The Gran Lujo runs the complete San Sebastián–Santiago de Compostela journey over eight days, with a private excursion every day.
Which to choose
If your priority is value and you are happy with a shorter trip, the Costa Verde Express is excellent. If you want the definitive Green Spain rail journey, with the most spacious suites and the full coast-to-Camino route, choose the Gran Lujo. As the authorized source, we book both and can match you to the right one.
